How To Create A Job
You Love On The Web
By Sue Barrett
Not found a job you like? Maybe you need to create it! The concept may sound silly or
overwhelming at first, but if you break it down into steps, youll see how simple it really
can be.
There are 3 basic steps you can follow to build a profitable business on the internet that
you enjoy. The idea behind this business-building strategy is to use your skills or
interests in a way that can provide income for you while at the same time enrich the lives
of others.
1. YOUR INTERESTS
Brainstorm. What are your particular interests or areas of expertise? (I know you have at
least one.) Make sure its something that you truly enjoy. This can make a big different in
the success of your business. If you love what you do, youll feel fulfilled, and the
effort you put in will not feel like work.
2. YOUR WEBSITE
Information is a high-demand item. You can find people interested in purchasing
information on almost any subject. If you provide this valuable information for free at
your website, you can attract all sorts of visitors who are interested in that particular
subject.
Now, lets get back to what you enjoy doing. You want to provide information or ideas on
your SPECIFIC subject. What needs do people have, and how can you fill them? Think of
things you have wanted at one time or another, but were not able to find (or wished there
was a faster, better, easier way).
For instance, lets say your hobby is eating pickles. There are lots of ideas you can
incorporate into your website.
- how to cook with pickles, pickling, pickle recipes - how to grow pickles - pickle
festivals or events - health benefits of pickles - how to send pickles as gifts - where to
buy gourmet pickles
Information can be portrayed in a variety of different formats. Consider your idea and the
audience you are targeting. What method will work best for your business?
- current news stories - weekly or monthly newsletters - how-to guides - comparisons of
products, services or companies
Remember, you want to provide worthwhile content that will keep your visitors coming back
and referring others. Constantly update your content with new ideas that are informative
and different. You dont need to be a know-it-all when you first start out. Dont be afraid
to learn as you go along.
3. YOUR INCOME
Many companies now offer affiliate or associate programs online. If you let them advertise
their products or services on your website, you can make money on any purchases made
though your site.
In addition to paying you - well-known, reputable companies can add credibility to your
business. PLUS, many will do most of the work for you. This includes stocking inventory,
taking orders, shipping products, handling customer returns and complaints, billing and
paying you, of course.
So, what products or services will enhance your website content and appeal to your
visitors?
You can find affiliate programs in all sorts of different industries (financial products
or services, internet-related, children or family-oriented, travel, home and garden,
sports, crafts / hobbies, education, etc) But lets get back to the pickle website. What on
earth would these people be interested in?
- Gourmet food clubs - Online gift shopping - Nutrition products - Cooking utensils -
Grocery coupons - Meal-delivery service - Vegetable planting equipment - Health or
vegetarian cooking magazines - Books (more information on pickles)
You dont need to drastically transform your life to start a business but you do want to
change your mindset. Building a successful work-at-home business requires you to be open
to new ideas and change. Be flexible welcome visitor feedback and make adjustments when
appropriate.
Work at your own pace, and make your business as big or as small as you want. Focus on
what you enjoy, and you can create a job you love on the web.
