HOW TO |
If you come accross a website or information on the web page that
you're not sure of its accuracy, then you should consider using the following criteria to
help you decide if you want to rely on its content.
This 5 point checklist can help you analyze information:
CONTENT: First of all does the site content make sense? Does it seem to flow in a
direction towards a final goal or is it more of a rambling style? If it's an
affiliate program is there enough information on the affiliate page to help you make a
decision based on facts as opposed to hype. Who is the author of the site? Does the person
have expertise with subject and information being presented?
OBJECTIVITY
: Is the purpose and intent of the author clear and
straight forward? Does the author(s) have a particular bias towards the information being
presented? If so is the information an opinion or is it a fact, and if it is a fact can it
be substantiated? go to a search engine (we like Google) and find out if you can
find any dirt on the company. This is hardly a science and I know that people tend to
complain more than they praise, but you might be able to find something out. If you find
one or two people complaining ignore it. If you find 30 or 40 something is going on.
ACCURACY : Are the facts as presented verifiable? Is the information presented in
a logical step-by-step fashion that builds to a logical conclusion? Is their more
"hype" than facts? Are any facts documented and well researched? Does the site
provide quality links to other sites that can help you further understand the information
being presented?
CURRENT :
Does the information follow along with the present times or does
it seem outdated?
USEABLE : If you visit the site
again has the author(s) updated any old information and replaced dead or broken links with
useable ones? Is it readily accessible, well designed for fast load time and easy to
navigate? Can you readily read and understand the information? Is it free of spelling and
grammar mistakes?
These 5 points above can help you look at the information contained on a site in a more objective manner. It is presented as information only and not as the only way to assess a web's content.
